Bankruptcy is the process of having a court declare that you no longer have personal liability for debts. This does NOT mean that the debt no longer exists, only that you do not have a legal responsibility to pay the debt.
There are several kinds of debts, including Secured, General Unsecured, and Priority Unsecured.
In the process of Bankruptcy, you agree that any assets you own are submitted to a trustee, who distributes any equity to the creditors.
There are several kinds of Bankruptcy, including Chapter 7 (Liquidation) Bankruptcy, which eliminates your personal liability for many kinds of debt, and Chapter 13 (Adjustment of Debts or repayment) Bankruptcy, which allows you to restructure your debts.
There are other kinds of Bankruptcy, like Chapter 11 (reorganization) which is usually by corporations and people who owe extremely large sums of money. Additionally, there is Chapter 15, which is an International Bankruptcy (when there is a related insolvency proceeding in another country), and Chapter 9 (locality reorganization), but KCLS limits the number of those that we are able to assist.
There are other kinds of insolvency proceedings, including receiverships.
